Congratulations to the 10 Politics students that took part in the Independent Schools Mock Trial last week. After a gruelling 3 rounds of competition, the practising barristers overseeing the trial crowned the team Regional Winners! Onto the final at the Old Bailey in June!

In the mock trial, students take on the roles of participants in a criminal trial: barristers for prosecution and defence, witnesses, ushers and court clerks. The team of Year 11s and Lower Sixth visited Southampton Crown Court and competed against four other schools in cases overseen by practising barristers; making opening and closing speeches, presenting evidence, cross examining witnesses from the opposing teams and being cross examined by their barristers in turn. It requires a great degree of preparation in order to become familiar with the details of one’s case, but also an ability to think on your feet as you never know what your opposing witness or barrister might say.
