A Week in the Modern Foreign Languages Department

Senior School Classics & Modern Foreign Languages

We began the week with an assembly marking the European Day of Languages, a day which celebrates linguistic diversity and the lifelong learning of languages. We represent over 20 languages in our School community, and both staff and pupils were encouraged to greet each other in a different language. The assembly focussed on the mishaps of mistranslations, often with hilarious examples and culminated in the launch of the tongue twister competition being run until Half Term.

Girls making an application to Oxford for languages have been discussing literature and poetry and have been put through their paces in a mock interview. Year 11 have enjoyed taster lessons in French, German and Spanish exploring stereotypes, film and an insight into the hugely varied topics offered by the MFL A Level specification. Many were excited by the possibility of doing further qualifications in their chosen foreign language in the form of the DELE, DELF or TestDaF.

The Mid-Autumn Festival was also celebrated in Chinese lessons with Janelle, Year 8, saying “I enjoyed all the foods that we were introduced to and learning the poem was really fun. I also enjoyed listening to a story about Chang’e”. Phoebe, Year 8, particularly enjoyed “eating seaweed and the moon cakes!”
