Badminton School

Business and Economics

If you have ever wondered why a particular business is so successful, how global events affect all businesses or what it takes to be an entrepreneur, then business or economics is the subject for you.

At Badminton girls can study Business Studies at GCSE and A Level and Economics at A Level.

The Department encourages students to read about the world around them and we hold regular discussions about news articles and nationwide events. There is a weekly Economic Forum, and pupils also have the chance to take part in the Tycoon Enterprise Competition and the Gain Investment Challenge.

GCSE Business Studies

The GCSE business course gives girls an understanding of what is involved in a business-related profession. This might include accountancy, law, marketing or the leisure and tourism industry.

Business allows pupils to communicate and explain their ideas, think creatively and make decisions, work with numbers to solve business problems and learn about the world of business through a real experience in the Peter Jones Tycoon Enterprise Competition.

A Level Business Studies

The course we follow covers a wide variety of business areas, from marketing, finance and human resources to operations, globalisation and the economy. We look at national and worldwide events and analyse them using business theory.

The course also emphasises the numerical skills needed for business, including preparing cash flow forecasts and income statements, as well as working out the elasticity of a particular product or service. Studying Business at A Level offers exciting opportunities to explore the business world using case studies in a range of contexts.

In today’s globally competitive environment, the study of business theory and practice helps students to accrue vital knowledge while developing their skills in decision making, problem solving and critical analysis.

A level Economics

The insights an A level in Economics offers into the problems faced today by businesses and governments helps pupils to make informed judgements about British, European and global issues. The subject also offers a strong platform for university-level study in Economics, Business and Accountancy.

Our curriculum is split into two main areas. Microeconomics looks at individuals, firms, markets and market failure and includes topics such as:

  • Law of Demand
  • Demand and supply elasticities
  • Production costs and revenue
  • Competitive market process
  • Market failure and government intervention

Macroeconomics looks at the national and international economy. Here we explore wider national economic issues including:

  • Economic growth
  • Inflation
  • Interest rates
  • Exchange rates
  • Unemployment
  • The Balance of payments on the current account.

We also look at international economies and their economic performance.
