Badminton School

Physical Education

At Badminton, we provide an inclusive programme of sport and exercise in a safe learning environment, supported by a broad and vibrant co-curricular programme. We work to build confidence, team spirit and an understanding of fair play for all.

Many pupils will go on to excel and to compete at the highest levels. All those at Badminton develop a positive outlook on their health and fitness and the sense of physical wellbeing that comes from the enjoyment of sport and exercise.

Badminton has many facilities on site that include:

  • A full-Size Hockey Astro Pitch
  • Netball courts
  • Tennis courts
  • Basketball courts
  • Fitness centre
  • Swimming pool
  • Climbing wall

Pupils in Year 7-11 have one PE lesson and one Games lesson per week. Pupils in the Sixth Form have one PE lesson a week.

Physical Education

In Years 7 to 9, Physical Education lessons cover a broad range of activities, including swimming, gymnastics, athletics, and tennis. These foundational years focus on building core skills, confidence, and physical literacy across multiple disciplines.

From Year 10 onwards, including in the Sixth Form, pupils are offered a choice of sport and fitness options, which rotate each term. These include activities such as yoga, badminton, fitness, football, and basketball, allowing students to pursue their interests and develop lifelong healthy habits.

Games

Our major sports are hockey (Autumn term), netball (Spring term) and cricket (Summer term). Pupils in Years 7 to 11 have a dedicated games lesson each week, focusing on skill development and tactical understanding in these key sports.

This is complemented by a full fixtures programme, with matches taking place both midweek and on Saturdays, providing regular competitive opportunities.

Co-Curricular

We offer a vibrant and diverse co-curricular programme led by our specialist Physical Education team and supported by expert external coaches. Pupils are encouraged to participate in a wide range of sports clubs held before school, during lunch, and after school.

Our strong partnerships with Gloucester Cricket and the Bristol South Gloucester Swim Club provide additional opportunities for high-level training and development. We also have a full-time tennis coach available for both individual and group lessons, along with specialist coaching in judo and fencing.

GCSE Physical Education (AQA)

The AQA GCSE PE course is split into 60% theory and 40% practical assessment. For the practical element, students are assessed in three different sports—one must be a team activity and another an individual sport.

If you have a passion for sport, this course is an excellent choice. It not only builds your knowledge and skills but also provides valuable practical experience that can lead to further education and a wide range of career opportunities.

A Level Physical Education (AQA)

A Level PE offers a balanced combination of academic theory and practical performance. The course explores the scientific, psychological, and sociocultural factors that influence physical activity and sport, alongside the development of personal performance.

Assessment is divided into two written exams (70%) and non-exam assessment (30%), which includes practical performance in one sport and an in-depth written analysis and evaluation of performance.

This course is ideal for students interested in careers in sports science, teaching, physiotherapy, coaching, or sports management, and provides a strong foundation for further study in related fields.
